3D Print Air Quality – PETG -vs- ABS and the Results are AMAZING!

In this episode, we will be looking at the air quality test for PET-G and must I am impressed as I expect that it is a “hotter” filament that it would be dirtier, however the result set me back in my chair and fact ran them a couple times to just double check the results!

Again we will use the same STL for the testings (as we will for all test) that was used in the ABS test.

If your interested in getting one of these meters, here is the link where you can find several options: diy3dtech.com/air-quality-meters-for-3d-printing/

Couple points worth note:

[1] Just because you don’t “smell” something doesn’t mean there aren’t particles in the air.
[2] Measurements in the video are for formaldehyde registering substances and TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compound en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatile_organic_compound).

This means there could be other “bad” things in the air which we are not measuring. So this is why one of the larger data points we will focus on are PM2.5 counts. So you might ask why we are so concerned about this? Well, Since they are so small and light, PM2.5 particles tend to stay longer in the air than their heavier siblings the PM10 particles. This increases the chances of humans and animals inhaling them and due to their small size, particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers are able to bypass the nose and throat and penetrate deep into the lungs with some may even enter the circulatory system.

There have been studies which have found a close link between exposure to fine particles and premature death from heart and lung disease. Fine particles are also known to trigger or worsen chronic disease such as asthma, heart attack, bronchitis and other respiratory problems as well as a Journal of the American Medical Association (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11879110) paper which suggests that “long-term exposure to PM2.5 may lead to plaque deposits in arteries, causing vascular inflammation and a hardening of the arteries which can eventually lead to heart attack and stroke. Scientists in the study estimated that for every 10 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) increase in fine particulate air pollution, there is an associated 4%, 6% and 8% increased risk of all-cause, cardiopulmonary and lung cancer mortality, respectively”

Now the goal this project is not to promote fear mongering, however information as homes are not factory’s and 3D printing introduces pollutants which many homes in their design where not meant to deal with.

Shop Talk – Solving My Core XY Motor Configuration Issues!

In this episode, we will be sorting out our issues with the motors on the Tronxy x5s as I had motor go bad so I changed it out with the cables and got myself into some trouble because doing so forgot this is a Core X/Y design and there really isn’t an X/Y axis but an Alpha & Beta as they work together much like a delta printer. This being the case, the motor configuration is a bit different and as I proceeded to troubleshoot the issue, figured it would be good to make a video to assist others who may also come across the same problem! Also, even if you don’t have a Core X/Y printer, this is still good video to check out as we will also share seveval general tips & tricks too!

I need to ask for a small favor…

In this episode, I need to ask a small favor as You Tube is changing their monetization policy which means the sister Open-SCAD channel will be demonitized this month if I don’t reach “their” numbers. Now this isn’t huge a thing as over a year it brings in only enough to buy a few rolls of filament, but that is a few rolls of filament that also helps create content for this channel too. Also, it’s the principle of it too, as Youtube has continually been tightening the reins on content providers and this is just a demotivator as making the amount of a Starbucks coffee is no big deal yet it is a source of encouragement to continue. So I just want to say thank you in advance for hearing me out on this 🙂

Also the bed heated up to 100c in no time at all was printing! Now I didn’t go crazy on retraction being the first PET-G print and wanted to avoid a nozzle clog but all in all the print came out great!

3D Print Air Quality – HIPS -vs- ABS Whos Cleaner!

In this episode, we will be looking at HIPS -vs- ABS from an air quality standpoint. As HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) is typically know as a support material for printing with ABS as it is dissolvable in in d-Limonene (see here: amzn.to/2Gm2Xp8).

However HIPS is also a good substitute for ABS as it is easy to print with as ABS but is much less likely to warp. HIPS is ideal for printing in conjunction with ABS because it has a similar strength and stiffness profile to ABS which means they complement each other well. It also helps that HIPS and ABS need to be printed around the same temperature with the bed at 55°C and the extrusion temp around 225°C. You see more and order HIPS from here: amzn.to/2EaJOpk

Again we will use the same STL for the testings (as we will for all test) that was used in the ABS test.

3D Print Air Quality – Is Printing with ABS Dangerous!

In this episode, we will be starting a multi-part series where we look at how various filament affect the air quality which we, our family and even pets (save for fish) breath in. Now before we go further, a medical disclaimer here as I am not a doctor nor heath care professional nor have I ever even played one on TV. So these are only my opinions and observations which I am sharing. These are not endorsements, issuance’s or warranties of any kind.
anomalies.

With that out of the way, we start with looking at ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) which is known to break down into some not nice stuff (see more here: diy3dtech.com/3d-printing-and-air-quality-risks/ ) when heated. Also for these test, we have tried several testing scenario as well as checked for repeatably to ensure the results there not one off anaolalies.

GearBest GeeeTech E180 – Designing and Printing an X-acto Knife Stand!

In this bonus episode, we will be creating an X-acto Knife stand from a generic base which we whipped up in Open-SCAD and printed out in clear PLA on the GearBest GeeeTech E180 mini printer. Now I got to say, I am impressed as while this appears simple it is not with its domed top and massive kruling makes this a very challenging print!

GearBest JGAURORA A5 – Bonus Printing a Voronoi Object!

In this episode, we will be seeing if the GearBest JGAURORA A5 can print a Voronoi style object (yes in the video I said Voronoi diagram as that is what I am use to :-). So I went off to Thingiverse and decided since we did a pawn already we would go scale and print a king as I wanted to test print the flatter top and cross. In addition I used glow in the dark PLA ( amzn.to/2rlHVDv ) for the print at 210c at 50mm/sec with 70c bed temp. Now I didn’t optimize for retraction or heat (I have glow in the dark prints a little hotter). However my goal was to see what results “Joe Average” expect when just taking this printer out of the box and I must adimit I was happy with the results so check and see what you think!
