In the lab this week we designed the new 28BYJ-48 stepper motor & board mount which can be used with either the Arduino or the Raspberry Pi for automation or robotic projects. The STL can be found over at TinkerCad (www.tinkercad.com/things/4TAvPHsP07x-28byj-48-motor-and-board-slide-mount) and while we do have a few more changes we would like to do, we do plan on sending a version up to Shapeways when we are done as again is a great little board for building all kinds of projects!

Well we finally got the28BYJ-48 Camera Slider Build completed and tested and it was interesting project to say the least as it was the first time working with steppers and Arduino together. The video above walks though what we learned as well as some of the short comings as again, this was not meant to be a full working project yet just one of those experiments to see what was possible for the money. New center stage for the 28BYJ-48 camera slider build, as after doing some testing a failing to tap threads (#8-32TPI). We decided to print a new slider with a slot for a #8 hex nut to slip in the center a also a 1/4inch 20 TPI hex nut to thread in a piece of plastic 1/4 inch 20-TPI rod stock to attach a camera too. When you watch the video, note how the hole for the hex nut is printed in mid-air with no supports! It still amazes me to this day how it can to this.

In this video you see the start of the assembly of the laser gimbal based upon the thingiverse design (www.thingiverse.com/thing:794786) with the addition of an in house designed base (on which to mount the gimbal with the stepper control boards) which can be found on TinkerCAD (www.tinkercad.com/things/kkIE3qFwVO1-28byj-48-gimbal-base). Watch for more on this too as we move forward with the build and program with the Arduino too!
Note: We taped the bottom of the base with 0.25inch x 20TPI threads to allow the gimbal to be mounted on a standard tripod.
Here is the first part of the build of the 28BYJ-48 stepper based camera slider, the base mounts came from Thnigiverse and uses two #6-32TPI rods and one #8-32TPI drive screw. In the next video we will add the rear spacer and the slide table so stay tuned for more!

Looking for a way to add a web camera to the labs XYZprinting Da Vinci 2.0 Duo 3D Printer without voiding the warranty, we came up with this nifty idea. The basic concept is to clip it to the stamp-out for LCD screen (inside the case) and the width is about 0.75 inches. Now the angle is around 30deg of stamp-out and one of the things we need to do is push the camera back a bit into the door opening (note: the door will still close because of the offset) as there was a focus issue being too close. The bracket can be downloaded and printed from TinkerCAD at www.tinkercad.com/things/iZqDlaLIWBT-da-vinci-20-duo-web-camera-bracket. SInce the camera which we use is rather light (in weight), we only used the standard light weight build settings.
Working on a couple Arduino projects in the lab so we decided to print a couple 28BYJ-48 Mounts on the XYZprinting Da Vinci 2.0 Duo 3D Printer. So you can see how they are printed, we set temp up on the bed 90 deg to each as they are a matching pair so you see the side as well a the front being printed in this time-lapse video. They where printed at a medium fill and think shell since they will have to take some torque.
Designed and printed a gimbal mount base for a 28BYJ-48 gimbal project which we found on Thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com/thing:794786) and the STL file for the base can be found on TinkerCad (www.tinkercad.com/things/kkIE3qFwVO1-28byj-48-gimbal-base). We used the XYZprinting Da Vinci 2.0 Duo 3D Printer and medium fill with thick shell for the print settings. If you notice the center is built up a bit with 1/4 Inch hole which will be taped with 20TPI thread to mount on a tripod. While the Thingiverse design shows a laser. We will also design a mount for a small web camera turning the project into a pan and tilt which can be placed on a tripod. We see a lot of uses for this design from security systems to pan and tilt photography applications.
